In today’s hyper-competitive electronics and information technology (E&IT) landscape, securing intellectual property internationally is crucial to safeguard innovations and tap into global markets. Recognizing this need, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) launched the Support for International Patent Protection in E&IT (SIPEIT) scheme to provide targeted financial assistance to Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and technology startups for filing patents abroad.
Objectives of SIPEIT
The scheme aims to:
· Encourage Innovation by offsetting the high costs associated with international patent filing.
· Recognize Global IP Value, enabling Indian innovators to capture growth opportunities in the ICTE sector.
· Create IP Awareness through workshops and dissemination activities, ensuring stakeholders understand the benefits and processes of global IP protection.
Who Can Apply?
· Registered MSMEs under the MSME Development Act, 2006.
· DSIR-Recognized Technology Startups and incubated units at Technology Incubation and Innovation Facilities.
· Technology Startup Units recognized under the Startup India program, focusing on indigenous inventions in electronics and ICT.
Financial Support & Coverage
· Reimbursement Cap: Up to ₹15 lakhs per invention or 50% of total expenses incurred—whichever is lower.
· Eligible Expenses: Includes official patent office fees, international search and examination fees, attorney/legal charges, translation costs, and related processing charges.
· IPR Awareness Component: Funding for seminars, workshops, and promotional materials to sensitize stakeholders about international IP protection.
How to Avail SIPEIT Benefits
1. Verify Eligibility: Ensure your entity is an MSME or a recognized technology startup.
2. Prepare Documentation: Gather proof of MSME/startup status, invention details, and a provisional patent application (if filed).
3. Submit Application: Apply through the designated MeitY portal or via the Office of the Controller of IPR, providing estimated costs and proposed countries for filing.
4. Claim Reimbursement: After completing the patent filing and payment, submit audited expenditures and filing receipts to claim reimbursement under SIPEIT.
